Benjamin F. Asher, MD

A New York City based, board-certified Otolaryngologist (Head and Neck Surgeon) Dr. Asher is renowned for his innovative, non-surgical approaches. In addition to being a highly-regarded conventional physician and exceptional diagnostician, he has been at the forefront of applying alternative methods to ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) disorders since the beginning of his medical career over thirty years ago .   Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Asher worked as a full-time meditation teacher.  His four decades of meditation practice and spiritual inquiry have informed his perspectives on health and wholeness.

His quest to identify the root cause of symptoms led him into the field of chronic systemic illness, particularly in the area of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.  Supporting patients with complex ailments was the impetus for investigating how health challenges can serve as a portal way to positive personal transformation.

Dr. Asher’s conventional training includes: the University of Iowa (the preeminent Otolaryngology residency in the country) where he was selected to serve as Chief Resident; and Harvard Medical School, where he completed a fellowship in Pediatric ENT. He has served on the faculty of Harvard, Washington University, and Dartmouth medical schools. While at Iowa, Dr. Asher was recognized for his pioneering research with Ingo Titze; their findings were published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Voice.

His study of complementary healing modalities includes: cranial osteopathy, hypnosis, myofascial therapy, the Feldenkrais Method, the Alexander Technique, and various energy medicine modalities. Dr. Asher works in cooperation with acupuncturists, chiropractors, and somatic healers as well as Ayurvedic, homeopathic, and naturopathic physicians. He has served on the board of the American Holistic Medical Association and is the founder and former chairperson of the Committee on Alternative Medicine for the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Asher is credited as the physician who discovered that boosting Glutathione, a substance naturally produced by the body, had a profoundly positive impact on the voice and could often be used in place of steroids or vocal cord surgery. His unique ability and steadfast desire to protect performers from the harsh, long-term side effects of conventional medical approaches has made him a valued team member for numerous theatrical, concert, film, and television performers. He has served as house physician for the New York City Opera and the New York City Ballet – and was selected as One of America’s Top Physicians by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Dr. Asher has published numerous professional articles and book chapters. He has been quoted as an expert in national consumer periodicals, featured on radio programs, and has been frequently invited to lecture to healthcare practitioners and the public, nationally and internationally.

He serves patients from throughout the United States and Canada, as well as those who seek his care from as far as, Europe, South America, Asia, and The Middle East.
