Do you know a teenager who suffers from migraines? A recent study from Germany shows relief can be found WITHOUT the use of pharmaceuticals – which often have bad side effects. Researchers established that often neck and shoulder pain is the source of the headaches in adolescents, and frequently, manual therapies can help. I’ve certainly seen this in my own practice. I find that releasing extremely tight necks and shoulders can reduce or even eliminate headaches. Common causes of the muscle spasms in include: poor posture while on a computer or mobile device, heavy backpacks, and low vitamin D3 from inadequate exposure to sunlight. For those of you who can’t get into my office, try solutions such structural bodywork (i.e. myofascial release, Rolfing, Hellerwork, cranial ostepathy) or postural awareness practices such as The Alexander technique or Feldenkreis. Any physician can assess vitamin D3 with a simple blood test, and levels can be raised with adequate nutritional supplementation.
